What Is An ISO Tank?

The versatile and consistent outer frame, combined with the durable interior lining makes an ISO tank ideal for transporting liquids via train, truck or ship. ISO tanks are used to ship a variety of materials, both hazardous and non-hazardous, all over the world.

Some examples of materials transported in ISO tanks include:

  • Water
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Sulphuric Acid

ISO Tank Specifications

ISO tanks are made according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) which regulates size, strength, and durability of the tanks. The standard size of ISO Tanks are what makes them so popular. These containers have an outer frame that is 20' long, 8' wide, and 8'6" high to allow for uniform stacking and shipping requirements. The frame surrounds an interior cylinder that can vary in size and capacity, from 3,000-6,000 gallons.

On the top of the tank, there is a manhole plus valves for filling, and another valve on the bottom for draining. There is often a thermometer, pressure gauge and other controls on the tank to monitor the status of the contents. Some tanks can be equipped with steam heating or cooling to keep contents at a specific temperature.

The ladder on the side allows access to walkways across the top, so that operators can easily get to all fittings. We all know how important safety is on any job site, which is why the frame of an ISO tank is locked in place to prevent the contents from shifting. This keeps the tank securely in place without the risk of tipping throughout it's entire use.

The interior lining gives ISO tanks another benefit because it is made of durable and easy-to-clean stainless steel. The linings are also resistant to corrosion, and are easily cleaned in between each use to prevent contamination from the previous load.

The Eco-Friendly Shipping Solution

Here's an interesting fun fact: ISO tanks are environmentally friendly! They have a longer life span compared to other types of shipping containers and they leave a carbon footprint that is almost 50% less than that of an equivalent drummed shipment on certain long-haul routes.

In addition to saving the environment, they can also save your business money since these containers cost around 30% less to ship compared to other methods.
